Tazmanian Tiger (Thylacine) Although the Tazmanian Tiger bears a striking resemblance to a canine, that is where it ends. This animal has no relation to the canine, or wolf families, but in fact is closer related to the kangaroo. First identified as a tiger because of the striping of the fur on the hind quarters, this animal is actually a marsupial and carries it's young in a pouch between the hind legs like a opossum. It was the the largest carnivorous marsupial known even though it was not know for agility or speed. It's hunting technique was to track it's prey over many miles and many hours wearing it down so that it could easily attack and kill it. The Taz Tiger was also considered a lone hunter and was rarely seen in packs. Today it is still reported seen on occasion in the northern parts of Tazmania but officially it is considered extinct.
